Tom Ford has launched Champaca Absolute, the latest addition to the Tom Ford Private Blend collection of fragrances. This Floral Oriental composition is Tom Ford's homage to the eternal, seductive power of Champaca. The multi-layered fragrance starts with opening notes of Tokajii Wine and Cognac to reveal the sensuous heart of Champaca Absolute and the final warm notes of Vanilla Bean, Amber and Sandalwood. A sensory showstopper, it could only have come from Tom Ford.

The name is a ‘reference’ to champaca absolute, a perfumer’s term for the liquid extraction of the flower. There are a few ways to extract the fragrance from the flower: CO2; concrete and absolute. Like many florals, the extraction process can vary the scent profile of the flower. Champaca Absolute then, makes reference to this ‘pure’ form of the champaca flower essence. Additional notes for Champaca Absolute include bergamot, davana, broom flower, orchid, violet, jasmine, marron glace. Champaca is related to the star anise family and it’s smell has been compared to magnolia; it is slightly less peach-y than magnolia with a bit of spice; many compare it to a white flower such as orange blossom, but admit that it has its own unique scent profile.

Champaca Absolute begins with a soft fermented plum note, very wine-like in a hazy sort of tannic effect. Immediately the champaca notes appear and blossom on my skin. The base notes are smooth and dry, in a soft chypre style - with a light sprinkling of fruity warmth to it. It’s the most unabashedly floral of all of the Private Blend scents. Apply lightly and give it a few minutes to settle on your skin. Then put on your sunglasses and stand tall when you walk out the front door!

Dark Rose is reminiscent of Montale Aoud fragrances based around rose, however while Montale executes the theme in a manner that I find not unlike being subjected to loud music in extremely close quarters, Dark Rose has more subtlety. Nevertheless, the richness of aoud, the equivalent of being draped in several layers of heavy silk, remains dense and dark.

The rose is unlikely to conjure soft petals and dewy blossoms, instead hinting at the woody stalk and earth covered roots that support the beautiful flower. The density lightens as the composition develops, leaving a matte veil of woods behind, its warmth comforting and rich. It manages to be alluring without striking the same chords as the more conventional orchestrations tend to do.

Perfume Carla was inspired by great-grandmother Coucha and her garden, cakes baked by her cousin and fragrances of childhood. The perfume is composed of Bulgarian rose with floral waves of garden flowers, bergamot, violet, iris, moss, caramel and powdery aromas which awake associations of grandmother's perfume. It was inspired by the plumeria and hibiscus flowers found in Costa Rica, which are said to bring an exotic, beach-like floral feeling to the Green Tea structure. The juice is a blend of invigorating tea notes, fresh citrus and aromatic spearmint, contrasted with lush exotic florals and earthy woods and musk tones. The top notes include bergamot, Ceylon black tea and kaffir limes, atop a heart that features Rangoon purple vine, orchid, lily, jasmine and green tea. The base combines woods, ambrette seeds and white narcissus. The bottle is a reinterpretation of the original, updated with a sheer lavender colour, contrasted by the signature green tea leaf motif. The colour-scheme is echoed on the outer carton.
